The odometer rolled over! Drum roll….I, Elizabeth Demas, have officially sold over FIVE MILLION dollars of Avon as of March 1, 2016! How did I do this? Read on!
11 years ago I opened a Licensed Avon Beauty Center – a retail location for selling Avon. Little did I know what this business would do for my family and I. Six years in I tore down the wall between my store and the store next door and became the “Avon Mega Store.” Just two years ago I opened a second location about 30 minutes to the north of my first location.
Would you believe this all started with me knocking on doors? Yeah. It did. In 2003 I lost my corporate job during a mass layoff and married just a few months later. There I was – new in town, no job, and two small children. I decided to start my own business and work from home to be with my kids. Six months after starting with Avon I had made it halfway up the leadership ranks (team building), sold over $10,000 worth of Avon and won a trip to Key West and Cozumel. In fact, I’d grown so quickly Avon flew me to New York and put me on the front cover of the magazine, that they had at the time, called Avon Dreams.
One of the ladies on the front cover, Linda Wimbish, had her own training center (something people did back then). I decided to open my own. It was a terrible mess! I lost money all six months I was open. I closed that location, but the experience showed me that our Kansas City metro area was in need of a retail location.
I figured, I have my MBA. This should come together easily. Wow, was I mistaken! The start was slow, slow, slow. My first day open I sold $50. The second day I sold $25. In fact, the entire first month I didn’t even sell enough to cover rent. I timed myself in and out and saw I worked 90-100 hours a week. Thankfully, about six months in I figured out marketing, sales increased greatly, and I was able to pay bills. Over time I was even able to start paying myself!
Now, here I am 11 years later. I’m needed two or so days a week at the stores and have a salary that’s higher than my original corporate job! It’s been a long, hard road. But the journey has been worth it.
The money and flexibility has allowed my family to engage in foster care, where we met our forth child. She had a lot of medical challenges for the first couple of years. I joked that it’s a good thing I owned my own business, or I would have been out of a job for all the missed work! Then the last year and a half my husband has been out of work (network engineer), but we have made it along okay due to my business.
I have been so blessed – in business and in life – I wanted to share my knowledge with others. I want others to achieve their goals and dreams as I have. To that end I am working on my book “From Knocking on Doors to Millions: 12 Strategies for Direct Sales Success.” I cover over a dozen ways you can build your own sales – all the way from wearing company swag, to knocking on doors, holding parties and more, more, more! I even interviewed nearly two dozen direct sales specialists from across a variety of companies (not just Avon) – all with their own areas of expertise.
The book should be completed very soon.
